Yoga for Scoliosis

Scoliosis, a curvature of the spine, can occur in adolescence or as we age.  When practicing yoga, it is important to take into consideration one's individual curve pattern to prevent injury and to maximize the benefits of the practice. As someone who has a mild scoliosis and a mom of a daughter with scoliosis, I've explored how yoga can support the body to function well with a curvature of the spine, whether one's had scoliosis most of one's life or it began in adulthood.

Yoga can offer opportunities to
  • Strengthen the muscles of the back and trunk that support the spine
  • Lengthen tissue and musculature that has become tight on the shortened side or through spinal rotation
  • Decrease pain
  • Improve posture
  • Improve breath capacity
  • Improve body awareness
  • Improve sense of confidence and well-being
